This is sort of a self portrait. I did it just as I had started to read Lovecraft, and had just finished re-reading a collection of short stories by Isabel Allende. The chemistry of the two certainly played tricks with the mind.
The actual manner in which I had distorted it came to me from a simple, everyday view... the doorknob in my washroom. In the cottage (read: hovel) I was living in at the tie the innner doorknob of the washroom door was dented only slightly in one spot that cased a very unusual distortion of the reflection thereupon. I decided I wanted to reprodice that reflection as part of a grotesque image.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the original photo from which this was made.
